Healing Family was our only workshop today and it was so much fun! We made masks (seems to be a theme) but instead of the masks that we made last week, we made masquerade ball masks. We brought about 7 different templates that everyone could choose from. This gave them a lot of creative freedom and it helped ensure originality. Everyone got right into and some even wanted more control. We had planned to trace and cut them out for them, but many completed the task on their own which was very good because it helps develop their motor skills. One thing I like in particular about this group is that it is so small. With so many volunteers we were able to work closely with the adults and have a more direct interaction. All of the masks turned out different, even between all the volunteers they were different. I am still blown away by the creativity that everyone has inside of them. As we left one of the women gave me a hug and it was so genuine, it was one of the nicest hugs I've ever had. Such wonderful people.
Last day....
The saying time flies when you're having fun definitely applies, plus we were always doing something. I won't bore you with a reflection of my entire experience just yet so don't worry.
Art Relief International was a phenomenal experience. I have learned to look at art as a way for people to express what they've gone through, how they feel and what they look forward to in the future, as well as, simply making art because it makes that person feel happy. I realized things about myself, like I usually like to take the lead (which isn't a bad thing, but it's important to let others lead). I've also learned that I have too many ideas sometimes or have too big of an idea but it all works out, I've learned to focus and bring it in. All these things will contribute to how I move forward from here.
I am also so fortunate to have met and worked along side all of these phenomenal people. Everyone was supportive, we all collaborated on projects and it was such a positive environment to work in. Everyone brought a different perspective and background which allowed everyone to learn and grow from one another. You hear about when you study to be a teacher, to appreciate people's background and you forget that it applies to daily life, not simply teaching children. I can't express how amazing this experience has been and how grateful I am. I also think I am in denial that I am leaving because it will be extremely sad.
